Re-registering your vessels and as a Master for 2026

Re-registering your vessels and as a Master for 2026

Registration for any Masters of any vessels registered under the Loch Lomond Byelaws 2023 are due to expire on the 31st January 2026. As we have now transitioned on to our online registration system, you can now register for 2026.

What you need to do:

  • Visit the Loch Lomond Registration Gateway and log into your account. You can then follow the re-registration link to re-register both yourself as a Master and for any vessels you currently have registered with ourselves;
  • If you no longer own any of the vessels or do not wish to use them on Loch Lomond again, you must notify us of the termination of registered ownership in your account viewing the vessel details of the specific vessel, then selecting “Actions” then “Terminate Registered Ownership”. If you fail to notify the National Park Authority of the sale you remain the registered owner of the vessel and potentially liable for offences under the Loch Lomond Byelaws.

Once you have re-registered yourself and your vessels, your will be issued with 2026 Annual Marks to display on your vessel. There is no charge for re-registration and the supply of your Annual Marks. Please ensure your Annual Marks are correctly displayed on your vessel along with your registration numbers, as failure to do so is a contravention of Byelaws 2.3(4) & 2.3(5). You can display your 2026 Annual Marks from the date you receive them. If you opt to collect your Annual Marks from our office at Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway our winter opening times are 8.45am to 3.45pm daily.

Please bear in mind that if you sell your vessel, you are required to notify the National Park Authority within 14 days of the sale.

Key Byelaws

Before heading out on Loch Lomond, we would strongly urge that you familiarise yourself fully with the Loch Lomond Byelaws 2023. In particular, we would like to remind all Loch users of the following:

  • While speed limits apply across the whole of Loch Lomond, there are speed restricted zones in place where the limit is reduced to 11kph or 6kph. In these areas it is also an offence to operate a vessel on the plane.
  • It is an offence to navigate a vessel in a manner that causes a nuisance or danger or without reasonable consideration to other vessels, wildlife or other persons using the Loch. When navigating the Loch, you should remember the negative impact that your wake can cause on other Loch users.
  • If another person is using your vessel and you are not present on your vessel, they must also have registered as a Master with the National Park Authority.
  • Under 16s cannot be in charge of a vessel with engine power greater than 5hp.

Over the spring and summer of 2025, our Ranger Service has been out on Loch Lomond and have engaged with in excess of 100 Loch users for breaches of the Loch Lomond Byelaws. While education is always our first aim, we will not hesitate to take enforcement action when required and have reported several individuals to the Procurator Fiscal for offences including:

  • Speeding;
  • Reckless or negligent navigation;
  • Navigating without due care and attention;
  • A Registered owner as an under 16 was in charge of a Personal watercraft;
  • Providing false information to a Ranger.

Behaviour towards staff

Unfortunately, during 2025 we have seen an increase in incidents of unacceptable behaviour towards our staff. While this behaviour is only exhibited by a small minority of loch users, it has a significant detrimental effect on our staff. Our staff are there to help make your visit to Loch Lomond a safe and pleasant one. Please treat the team with respect. The National Park Authority will not tolerate any form of abusive or aggressive behaviour towards our staff. Unacceptable behaviour towards our staff and/or volunteers will be reported and can result in further legal action or a referral to Police Scotland.

 Staying Safe on Loch Lomond

We encourage safe and responsible access on Loch Lomond. We advise that you familiarise yourself with our boating safetywater safety and National Nature Reserve guidance for Inchcailloch. Please remember that if you are involved in or witness an incident on the Loch that requires the emergency services call 999, ask for the Police then ask for the Loch Lomond Rescue Boat.

Loch Lomond Association

We regularly meet with representatives of the Loch Lomond Association (LLA) to discuss the use and management of the Loch.  Please see the link below regarding information about membership of the LLA, including application and contact details should you be interested in joining the LLA.
